Chronic Back Pain

Chronic back pain is one of the most common pain conditions and may result from arthritis, disc degeneration, facet joint pain, muscular strain, or previous injuries.

Symptoms to be aware of:

  • Dull or sharp pain lasting more than 3 months

  • Stiffness or difficulty bending

  • Pain radiating to the legs (sciatica)

  • Flare-ups with prolonged sitting or activity

Common treatment options:

  • Physiotherapy and exercise programs

  • Medications (anti-inflammatories, neuropathic agents)

  • Image-guided spinal injections (facet blocks, nerve blocks, epidurals)

  • Radiofrequency ablation (RFA)

  • Neuromodulation techniques (in select cases)

  • Multidisciplinary pain management programs

Osteoarthritis Pain

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint condition affecting knees, hips, spine, and hands, caused by gradual cartilage wear.

Symptoms to be aware of:

  • Joint pain that worsens with activity

Common treatment options:

  • Lifestyle and exercise therapy

  • Physiotherapy and hydrotherapy

  • Medications (NSAIDs, analgesics, topical agents)

  • Intra-articular corticosteroid injections

  • Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) injections

  • Viscosupplementation (gel injections)

  • Radiofrequency ablation for joint pain

  • Surgical referral in advanced cases

Neuropathic Pain

Neuropathic pain arises from nerve damage or dysfunction, often linked to diabetes, shingles, trauma, surgery, or compression.

Symptoms to be aware of:

  • Burning, shooting, or electric-like pain

  • Numbness or tingling

  • Hypersensitivity to touch or temperature

  • Pain persisting at rest

Common treatment options:

  • Neuropathic pain medications (e.g., pregabalin, duloxetine)

  • Nerve blocks and targeted injections

  • Pulsed Radiofrequency (PRF) therapy of targeted nerves

  • Spinal cord stimulation (in selected cases)

  • Physical therapy and desensitisation

  • Psychological support and education

Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition that amplifies pain signals in the brain and nervous system.

Symptoms to be aware of:

  • Symptoms to be aware of:

  • Widespread muscle and joint pain

  • Fatigue and poor slee

  • Difficulty concentrating (“fibro fog”)

  • Heightened pain sensitivity

Common treatment options:

  • Individualised exercise and pacing

  • Medications (neuropathic agents, antidepressants)

  • Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT)

  • Sleep hygiene and stress management

  • Multidisciplinary pain programs

Chronic Neck Pain

Chronic neck pain may be caused by disc problems, arthritis, muscle strain, or posture issues.

Symptoms to be aware of:

  • Aching or stiffness

  • Pain radiating to shoulders or arms

  • Headaches at the base of the skull

  • Tingling or numbness in upper limbs

Common treatment options:

  • Physiotherapy and posture retraining

  • Medications and anti-inflammatories

  • Facet joint injections or medial branch blocks

  • Radiofrequency ablation (RFA)

  • Targeted strengthening and ergonomic interventions

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic, often debilitating condition that typically develops after an injury or surgery, affecting an arm, leg, hand, or foot. It involves abnormal nerve responses that lead to prolonged pain and changes in skin, circulation, and motor function.

Symptoms to be aware of:

  • Persistent, burning or throbbing pain in a limb

  • Skin temperature or colour changes (red, blue, pale)

  • Swelling and sensitivity to touch

  • Changes in hair or nail growth

  • Joint stiffness or muscle weakness

  • Limited movement or coordination

Common treatment options:

  • Early intervention with physiotherapy and graded movement

  • Neuropathic pain medications (e.g., amitriptyline, pregabalin)

  • Sympathetic nerve blocks

  • Mirror therapy and desensitisation techniques

  • Psychological support (pain-focused CBT, coping strategies)

  • Spinal cord stimulation (for refractory cases)

  • Multidisciplinary rehabilitation approach
