Chronic pain is long-lasting pain that persists beyond the normal healing time, often continuing for months or even years. Unlike acute pain, which serves as a warning signal for injury or illness, chronic pain can exist without a clear cause or persist after the initial injury has healed. It may be constant or come and go, and can significantly impact a person's physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Chronic pain is often associated with conditions such as arthritis, nerve damage, fibromyalgia, or back problems, and may require a multidisciplinary approach for effective management.
What is chronic pain?
Yes. You’ll typically need a referral from your GP to access specialist care.
This referral allows the specialist to understand your medical history and ensures that your condition is appropriately assessed and managed. In many cases, having a GP referral is also necessary to be eligible for Medicare rebates or private health insurance coverage. Your GP will evaluate your symptoms and determine which type of specialist—such as a pain specialist, neurologist, or rheumatologist—is most suitable for your needs.
